Three of our six glasshouses are dedicated to this much-loved, versatile fruit. We grow only the ‘premium’ varieties of tomato, and they’re usually sold on the vine.
Each greenhouse has a different mix of varieties inside. They’re grown in zones that allow us to change the growing conditions to suit the very different needs of each variety. We’ll tend to grow two crops in a year, interplanting the new baby plants between the older plants so they grow up ready to take over production. A tomato vine can reach some 15 metres in length in our greenhouses.
We harvest around 400 million tomatoes a year in a greenhouse space that would fit more than 25 football pitches.
